Why Are Pharmacy Residency Programs Important?

Babin: Pharmacy residency programs are important because it provides some valuable training for pharmacy residents. Post-graduate training allows the pharmacy resident to think independently, while still having coaching and mentors in the dedicated areas.

It also develops a valuable skill set that we find valuable to the organization. The valuable skill set that I’m talking about are pharmacists that are trained to really evaluate literature and know evidence-based guidelines and be able to stand on their own. It also lets the pharmacy resident creatively think about independent ways to approach problems. Given the training they’re given on guidelines and recommendations, they are also involved in many committees throughout their training. They’re also responsible for the development and implementation of a project—a year-long longitudinal project they do need to implement.

Those are things that contribute to the residents’ overall growth, which is a very valuable asset in the long run.
